Anwar Ibrahim Wraps Up Successful G20 Mission in Johannesburg, Heads to Nairobi for Final Leg of Africa Tour

JOHANNESBURG November 23, 2025 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim concluded a high-impact working visit to South Africa tonight, declaring the mission a success in strengthening strategic cooperation with Pretoria and amplifying Malaysia’s principled voice on the global stage at the historic G20 Summit.

“The Johannesburg leg has fully achieved its core objectives: deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple strategic sectors between Malaysia and South Africa, and opening new avenues that will directly benefit the peoples of both nations,” Anwar wrote in a social media post moments after departing the Nasrec Expo Centre.

During the two-day G20 Leaders’ Summit – the first ever hosted on African soil – Malaysia, attending as a guest nation and representing ASEAN interests ahead of its 2025 Chairmanship, delivered strong interventions on Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, AI governance, just energy transitions, and equitable climate finance.

Anwar’s addresses drew widespread attention for invoking the legacy of apartheid in calling for an immediate end to violence in Gaza and for urging a fairer global financial architecture that prioritises education over debt servicing and supports smallholder farmers in the Global South.

Before boarding the flight to Nairobi – the final stop of his African diplomatic swing under the MADANI framework – the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the entire Malaysian delegation, the High Commission in Pretoria, security personnel, and accompanying media for ensuring seamless execution of the packed programme.

“Thank you to the whole team from the ministries involved, the Malaysian High Commission in Pretoria, our security officers, and media friends who made everything run smoothly,” he said, signing off with a warm Zulu farewell: “Hambani kahle. Xoxo 🤍👍🏻” (Go well).

The Prime Minister and delegation are now en route to Kenya, where bilateral talks with President William Ruto and discussions on trade, investment, and regional cooperation are scheduled over the next two days before the MADANI Diplomacy mission concludes.
