During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed the diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Botswana, which have been established for over three decades on the foundation of mutual trust, respect, and shared aspirations for the progress of the peoples of both nations.

“Botswana remains an important partner for Malaysia in the African region,” Anwar said in a statement uploaded to his social media immediately after the meeting.

Among the ongoing Malaysian investments and cooperation in Botswana are:

– The automotive wiring manufacturing sector;

– Locomotive and carriage maintenance operations by a Malaysian company.

Vice President Gaolathe also expressed appreciation for the close cooperation through PEMANDU and Malaysian experts, which have helped strengthen Botswana’s institutional capacity in pursuing economic growth and public service reform agendas.

Both sides agreed to explore new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in fields that leverage each country’s respective strengths.

Anwar also extended greetings of friendship to Botswana’s President Duma Boko as a symbol of Malaysia’s continued commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Botswana.

The meeting forms part of Anwar’s packed schedule on the margins of the 2025 G20 Summit, which has seen him hold a series of bilateral engagements with world leaders to bolster Malaysia’s position as a strategic partner for African nations and the Global South.
