JOHANNESBURG  November 21. 2025  – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived safely in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa today to attend the G20 Summit that begins tomorrow, at the official invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.

In a post on his social media shortly after landing at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Anwar described the invitation as proof of South Africa’s continued commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and South Africa, rooted in friendship, mutual respect, and shared aspirations as nations of the Global South.

“Insya-Allah, participation in this G20 Summit opens important opportunities for me to share the aspirations and achievements of Malaysia as ASEAN Chair 2025, while voicing Malaysia’s stance on pressing issues affecting our region and the world,” Anwar wrote.

He further emphasised that Malaysia’s presence in Johannesburg is not merely about attending the conference, but reflects the nation’s determination to strengthen Global South solidarity and explore more meaningful cooperation in various strategic areas for mutual benefit.

This year’s G20 Summit, the first ever to be held on the African continent, adopts the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” and is expected to discuss critical issues such as reform of global financial institutions, green energy transition, poverty, inequality, and food security.

As a special guest, Malaysia is expected to continue championing the voice of developing nations, including calls for a fairer multilateral trading system and more inclusive Global Economic Governance reforms.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, including with President Ramaphosa and other G20 leaders, to strengthen bilateral economic and investment cooperation.

The Prime Minister’s attendance at this premier global economic forum is regarded as a vital opportunity for Malaysia to further elevate the country’s position as a leading voice of the Global South while serving as ASEAN Chair in 2025.
